“It still works.” That’s what we hear most often from organizations running Visual Basic 6 applications. The order system hums along, users know the screens by heart, and nothing has visibly broken in years. So why change anything?
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Microsoft ended support for VB6 back in April 2008. We’re now in 2026. That means nearly two decades without security patches, running on a 32-bit, COM-based platform that the rest of the technology world has long since moved past. An application that “works” isn’t the same as an application that’s safe.
In a recent Innovatix Tech Talk, Joe Raffinelli, Director of Technical Solutions, and Nellaiappan, Senior Technical Project Manager, introduced a new AI-assisted tool built to answer one simple question for IT leaders: how risky is my VB6 application, really? The tool is called VB6 Risk Matrix, and it’s free to download.
Most business owners know they have legacy VB6 software. What they don’t know is what that software is exposed to. Is it vulnerable to modern attacks? Does it depend on third-party controls whose vendors disappeared years ago? Would it even run on a new machine?
Because the application keeps running day to day, these risks stay invisible until something goes wrong. VB6 Risk Matrix was designed to be an eye-opener: a clear, evidence-based report that shows exactly where your application stands, so you can make an informed decision about modernization instead of a guess.
Using the tool is simple. You download and install it from the Innovatix website, enter your company and project name, point it at your VB6 project folder, and click Start Analysis. Within moments, it produces a detailed report.
Behind the scenes, the tool ships with a built-in knowledge base of legacy technology: VB6 language patterns, COM objects, ActiveX controls, and a catalog of third-party components from that era. This knowledge base was built using AI, combined with more than a decade of hands-on migration experience from the Innovatix team. The scanning engine maps your source code against that knowledge base and generates its findings.
In the live demo, Nellaiappan ran the tool against a sample VB6 order management system with 510 total files, 260 source files (forms, modules and classes) and roughly 157,000 lines of code. The resulting report covered:
With so much detail, where should you start? As Joe noted, focus first on the Critical and High findings. Those are the openings bad actors can exploit most easily.
The most important question from the session was about privacy. If a tool scans your code, does that code get sent to the internet, or to an AI model for training?
The answer is no. VB6 Risk Matrix operates with zero code exposure. The knowledge base and scanning engine are bundled inside the application and run entirely on your own machine. You can even run it on a standalone, non-internet-connected computer. Nothing is uploaded, shared or used for training.
Beyond the report itself, the conversation highlighted why legacy VB6 is a growing business risk:
Timelines – Depending on size, a migration typically ranges from about six months for smaller applications, to around twelve months for mid-sized ones, and up to 18 to 24 months for large enterprise systems. With AI-assisted tooling, Innovatix has cut delivery time on large projects by more than 50% while maintaining quality.
Low-risk rollout – Clients don’t have to “flip a switch.” Two common approaches are an MVP-based rollout, where business-critical modules go live first, often within three to six months, and parallel running, where old and new systems operate side by side with data synchronized between databases. Users transition gradually, can compare results, and the business is never left exposed.
Architecture guided by risk – The risk report is the starting point. Innovatix analyzes it with you in one-on-one sessions, understands your business challenges, identifies replacements for deprecated third-party controls (commercial or open source), and helps you choose a target such as a modern desktop or browser-based application, hosted on-premises or in the cloud. Every risk in the current system is mapped to how it will be eliminated in the new one, giving you a clear modernization roadmap.
One attendee asked whether the tool can certify an application as GDPR, HIPAA or PCI compliant. It can’t, and it isn’t designed to. What it does is surface the risks and code-level issues relevant to how your application handles data, along with recommendations. Formal certification remains the role of your compliance team.
If your business still depends on a VB6 application, the question isn’t whether it carries risk. It’s how much, and where. VB6 Risk Matrix gives you that answer quickly, privately and at no cost.
Download VB6 Risk Matrix freefrom the Innovatix website, run it on your application, and share the report with our team. We’ll help you interpret the findings and build a modernization plan that protects your business every step of the way.
